Does ChatGPT use your data for training?
In the free and personal plans, ChatGPT can use your conversations to improve its models by default. You can turn that off in the settings. If you use OpenAI's API or a business plan such as ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, OpenAI does not use your data for training by default. The key word is default: the setting matters, and many users never check it.
What actually happens when you type into ChatGPT?
When you open ChatGPT in a browser and start a conversation, you are using the consumer product. By default, OpenAI states that it may use those conversations to train and improve its models. That means the text you type, including questions, business information or client details, can become part of the data OpenAI learns from.
This is not hidden: OpenAI explains it in its privacy policy and help pages. But many people never read those, and the default setting is not obvious. If you want to stop this, you can go to Settings > Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. Once you do that, new conversations are no longer used for training.
Does it work the same way for business plans?
Not quite. Paid personal plans such as Plus follow the same default as the free version. If you access ChatGPT through the API, OpenAI does not use your inputs and outputs for training by default. The same applies to the business plans, ChatGPT Business (formerly Team), Enterprise and Edu: OpenAI does not train on your business data by default.
For a small or mid-sized business, the plan you use makes a real difference. A freelancer using the free consumer version is in a different situation than a company that connects ChatGPT to its internal tools via the API.
What does this mean for sensitive business information?
If you or your team regularly paste client data, contract details, financial information or personal data into ChatGPT, you are taking a risk, even with the training toggle off. Your data still passes through OpenAI's servers. It is processed, even if it is not stored for training. For truly sensitive information, a consumer AI tool is not the right environment.
That is also why, in the Stimpy Academy, we help teams agree on what can and cannot go into AI tools, and where useful we build internal tools that fit those rules.
A practical check for your business
Ask yourself three things. First, which version of ChatGPT are you and your team using? Second, have you checked the data controls in the settings? Third, are you pasting information into a tool that was not built for business-level data protection?
Want clear agreements on this for your team? An AI usage policy is a practical start, and the Stimpy Academy helps teams put those rules into practice.
Follow-up questions
Yes. In the consumer version, go to Settings, then Data controls, and turn off the option that says Improve the model for everyone. After that, new conversations are not used for training. Note that this applies going forward, not to past conversations.
Opting out of training does not mean your data is never stored. OpenAI retains conversation data for a period for safety and abuse monitoring, even when you opt out of model training. Temporary Chats are not used for training but are kept for up to 30 days for safety reasons. Check OpenAI's current privacy policy for the exact retention periods, as they can change.
For data use, yes. ChatGPT Enterprise does not use your data for training by default, and it offers additional security and admin controls. It is designed for business environments where data privacy is a priority. The free consumer product has different defaults.
